About Asbestos

Asbestos is a group of six natural minerals and was a very popular building material from the 1950s up to the turn of the century when it got banned due to its very dangerous impact on our health. The reason for its wide use was its desirable properties such as sound absorption and resistance to fire and heat. These factors made it great for fireproofing and insulating homes.

Why is asbestos dangerous?

Asbestos kills over 5000 workers in the UK every year. However, it can’t be harmful unless the material it is in is damaged or disturbed. This is when the asbestos fibres are released into the air and will impact your health. So if the asbestos containing material is unharmed, it is best to leave it, as disturbing it through removal can be more risky than containing it. You can’t see or smell asbestos, which is why it is difficult to notice and what makes it even more dangerous.

The impact of the asbestos will not be noticeable immediately, it’s something that gradually affects you years later after exposure. Once you are able to have it diagnosed, it is often too late. Asbestos can cause lung cancer and other very serious and sometimes even fatal diseases.

Where can asbestos be found?

Asbestos can be found in several areas of a building. The use of asbestos cement was common and can be found on the exterior (roof, panels and gutters) of the building or the interior (places such as water tanks). It can be found in ceilings, walls, fire doors, window panels, around the boiler, toilet seats and several more areas. Have a look at the Health and Safety Executive website for a more extensive list.

If you’re unsure of whether asbestos is present in your home, scheduling an asbestos survey with an asbestos removal specialist is a good way to get reassurance. In old buildings it is a good idea to do this before carrying out any renovation work. If you are in need of any guidance regarding any aspects of asbestos or asbestos removal, please get in touch with our team to discuss your concerns.
